TRAFFIC

This division encompasses Traffic Engineering and Traffic Safety, as well as, Public Information and FOIL Office for DPW.

TRAFFIC ENGINEERING

The Traffic Engineering Division undertakes the following duties:

Traffic Engineering investigations, requests and responses.

bullet

Transportation planning functions (in conjunction with WCDOT-MHSTCC).

bullet

Operation and maintenance of County traffic signals.

bullet

Administration of County agreement with Westchester Commuter Central (WCC).

bullet

Administer Countywide Traffic Count Program.

bullet

Department liaison with FHWA, NYSDOT, NYSTA, etc.

bullet

Building Application and Permit reviews and approvals.

bullet

Maintenance and Protection of Traffic plan design/review.

Adopt-A-Road.

The goals of this section are to minimize the number of vehicle-related injuries and fatalities, while increasing public awareness of traffic safety within the County by providing safety information and educational programs targeting occupant restraints; pedestrian, bicycle and school bus safety and ways to mitigate aggressive driving.

Primary Areas of Responsibility Include, but not limited to:

Organization and administration of the County's Traffic Safety Board functions, including processing of the Governor's Traffic Safety Committee grants and proposals from local municipalities and preparing Strategic Plan for Traffic Safety.

Administration and performance of the following Traffic Safety Grant Programs:
- Community Traffic Safety Program
- Selective Enforcement for Traffic Safety (Local Police and  Westchester County Police).
- Impaired Driving and Under 21 Alcohol Enforcement Program (In cooperation with Yonkers and Peekskill Police Departments).
- Child Passenger Safety Programs
- Buckle Up NY Enforcement Programs

Traffic Safety Board Sponsored Programs

Community Traffic Safety Program
- Community Traffic Safety Presentations: includes schools, corporations, senior citizen groups, rotaries and other community groups.
- Libraries provided with educational materials.
- Goals attained are the reduction of fatalities from all motor vehicle crashes in Westchester County.
- Development of effective safety campaigns have increased seat belt usage to 93% countywide.

Selective Enforcement Grant for Traffic Safety
- Participation by local police departments to increase enforcement of safe speed and mitigating aggressive driving.
- Selective enforcement increased seat belt and car seat usage rates in all communities participating in the past.
- Issuance of summonses increased in selected enforcement locations throughout the County.

Under 21 Alcohol Enforcement and Impaired Driving Programs
- Police enforce prohibition of sale of alcohol to under 21 youths.
